Who We Are: Independent journalism that offers the stories behind the headlines

retro report is an independent objective nonprofit news organization and what that means is that we're really thinking about serving the public good that's defining our mission more than anything else we're not letting commercial interests or corporate interests drive us that we are really focused on increasing the quality of digital video it can't all be cat videos and quick takes and we can't surrender the digital space to subpar journalism there has to be better standards and higher standards and more in-depth reporting our country is out of control what I think makes us different and special is that we really focus on how the past connects to the present and what that means for the future most of the places I worked was a breaking news environment instead of chasing the news we used to joke it was feeding the news monster and it was a 180 opposite of what we do here at retro reports we really do the deep dive into what led us to this moment why are we in this situation that we're in that's given rise to this breaking news event Harvey Weinstein stands accused of decades of sexual harassment I had been working on a story about sexual harassment in the workplace for about seven months and when all of a sudden the Harvey Weinstein story broke Weinstein fired the whole media pack was chasing this story why in god's name we very thoughtfully took the long view we had an Anita Hill interview where she talks about sexual harassment in the workplace we have to remember where we started we spend months and a lot of resources reira porting what originally happened going back and tracking down the original participants in the story finding all the documents that haven't been there and then really vetting them in fact checking them again and again because we believe that we're the second draft of history in a lot of these cases and we have to get it right you said it early the deepest bias in journalism is the bias towards what's new what's fresh what's hot what do we think the dummy's out there watching this one see and what's really different about retro report is the organization is built to fight that bias we're not chasing 24-hour news cycle we don't care about being first we care about being right so-called cocaine baby predators the trenchcoat mafia and we especially care about being right on story's where everybody else was wrong it's an exciting time for nonprofit journalism people know that we need a more substantive highly engaged heavily reported perspective and nonprofit news organizations can offer that I think our videos can make you a better news consumer and a better critical thinker about the world around you both how we got here and where we're going in the future
