BALILES HAD BEEN SICK FOR SEVERAL WEEKS, BATTLING CANCER. HE SERVED VIRGINIA FROM 1986 TO 1990. KNOWN AS THE “TRANSPORTATION GOVERNOR”, BALILES PUSHED A MASSIVE $10- BILLION DOLLAR TRANSPORTATION BILL THROUGH THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY DURING THE FIRST YEAR OF HIS ADMINISTRATION. HIGHER GAS TAXES AND SALES TAXES HELPED BUILD A BIGGER HIGHWAY SYSTEM ACROSS VIRGINIA. HE WAS ALSO KNOWN FOR HIS ENVIRONMENTAL BILL THAT HELPED CLEAN UP THE CHESAPEAKE BAY. NAVY OFFICIALS SAY A BODY WAS FOUND FLOATING IN THE WATER AT NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD IN PORTSMOUTH. IT HAPPENED THIS MORNING AROUND 8:30 NEAR PIER 5. THE BODY WAS PULLED FROM THE WATER AROUND 11 AND TURNED OVER TO THE MEDICAL EXAMINER. AS SOON AS WE LEARN MORE ABOUT WHO THE PERSON IS AND THE CIRCUMSTANCES SURROUNDING THIS DEATH, WE’LL LET YOU KNOW. SUFFOLK POLICE HAVE CHARGED A MAN IN THE DEATH OF HIS OWN SON. INVESTIGATORS SAY THEY ARRESTED 56- YEAR-OLD EARL BRYANT BOONE, SENIOR MONDAY NIGHT AFTER HE SHOT HIS 36-YEAR-OLD SON, EARL BRYANT BOONE JUNIOR, IN THE PARKING LOT OF SENTARA OBICI HOSPITAL. BOONE, SENIOR IS FACING FIRST DEGREE MURDER CHARGES AND IS BEING HELD AT THE WESTERN TIDEWATER REGIONAL JAIL. THE SHOOTING HAPPENED JUST BEFORE 6:30 IN THE EVENING. FIRE AND RESCUE CREWS WERE AT THE HOSPITAL, TRANSPORTING A PATIENT IN AN UNRELATED CASE. THEY SAW BOONE, JUNIOR AND QUICKLY GOT HIM INSIDE THE EMERGENCY ROOM WHERE HE LATER DIED. THE CITY OF VIRGINIA BEACH NOW HAS A PLACE FOR HEALING AFTER THE MASS SHOOTING ON MAY 31ST. THIS WEEK MARKS FIVE MONTHS SINCE THE MASS SHOOTING THAT LEFT 12 PEOPLE DEAD, AND FOUR OTHERS INJURED. GOVERNOR NORTHAM AND MAYOR BOBBY DYER HELPED TO DEDICATE THE NEW V-B STRONG CENTER TUESDAY MORNING. THE NEW CENTER IN THE LANDSTOWN COMMONS SHOPPING CENTER WILL OFFER TONS OF SERVICES INCLUDING THERAPY, YOGA, SUPERVISED DAYCARE AND A PLACE FOR THE COMMUNITY TO COME TOGETHER AND HEAL. MAYOR DYER BEGAN HIS REMARKS BY RECITING THE NAMES OF THOSE WHO WERE KILLED. GOVERNOR NORTHAM SAYS THIS TYPE OF CENTER IS VITAL BECAUSE OF THE LASTING EFFECTS OF THE TRAGEDY.
