Study Abroad is for Journalism Majors!

most journalism students can't sit still when it comes to chasing a good story luckily students at the Philip Merrill College of Journalism have plenty of options to chase stories abroad journalism has to journalism specific exchanges one at the world Melbourne Institute of Technology in Australia and the second one at the University of Hong Kong and we don't send a tremendous amount of students to Hong Kong although RMIT has some interest I'd say a lot of journalism students end up preferring to go to either our Maryland in London or mound in Rome programmes because those programs offer courses that are applicable to the journalism major male students looking to travel great distances don't have to go far to find which program interests them the most with several countries to choose from at the education Abroad Office students at the Merrill college can spend their winter term summer term semester or full year studying journalism in a foreign country after working with journalism students in the past advisors at the education Abroad Office for the University of Maryland notice the unique reason why these specific students decide study abroad I think they're always very keen to study how journalism is conducted in other countries now they can't necessarily take courses that would apply back to their major requirements that's according to the school but we're always happy to give students some other type of exposure but again I think they're very interested in social media media in general how reporting is done in other countries and that reflects the courses they're taking whether it's language courses fulfilling some sort of concentration in area studies if they can't take a journalism course all the better be a very keen to know how journalism is conducted abroad as a mayoral student who has taken the initiative to pursue one of these journalism programs junior multi-platform journalism and marketing double major Erika Benelli went to Latvia during the winter of her freshman year Benelli says one of her most memorable experiences was working with Latvia reporters and explains that she felt a shared bond between these journalists despite the language barrier besides like obviously the really fun exploring of Estonian latvia and all the different tourist attractions my favorite part definitely was interviewing these local citizens at the soup kitchens because we got to see the real people who lives there and not just all the tourist attractions and it was so cool to work with the Latvian journalists and even though I couldn't directly understand what they're saying I felt like somehow connected to them through the interviews and it was really hard because we could only imagine what they were saying until later the lobbying student translated for us but it just felt really really cool to get to know their local real perspective on the economy and how things were going going from a winter program to a summer abroad the Salzburg Academy on media and Global Change offers journalism students the unique opportunity to work with global organizations for three weeks in Austria but we work with international organizations so this past year we worked with the Red Cross Red Crescent we work with the United Nations Development Programme and work with a journalism if students are interested in signing up it can look forward to working in groups to gain a better understanding of global issues another study abroad option for journalists is the fellowship at Auschwitz for the study of professional ethics it includes an all-expenses-paid trip to Germany and Poland managing director Thorin tritter visited night hall to speak with students and he explained that the journalists who participate in this program give the chance to understand their ethical role and today's work for our journalists we hope they take away something about how powerful they have how powerful they are their voice in society and what they can do to shape it and I think that's generally what they do take away male students eager to expand their global understanding have plenty of options when it comes to experiencing the news internationally at the Philip Merrill College of Journalism I'm Christie novel reporting
