((MALLORY)) WE BEGIN WITH SAD NEWS TO REPORT ááá THE PULASKI COUNTY CORONER CONFIRMS CIVIL RIGHTS ACTIVIST AND STATE REPRESENTATIVE JOHN W. WALKER DIED LAST NIGHT AT HIS LITTLE ROCK HOME. AFTER HE BEGAN THE GENERAL PRACTICE OF LAW IN LITTLE ROCK WITH THE EMPHASIS ON CIVIL RIGHTSáá HE OPENED ONE OF THE FIRST OF THREE RACIALLY INTEGRATED LAW FIRMS IN THE SOUTH. WALKER HAS BEEN INVOLVED IN MOST OF THE REPORTED CASES WHICH INVOLVED RACIAL DISCRIMINATION IN ARKANSAS. HE HAD BEEN TREATED FOR CANCER IN THE PAST, BUT TOLD PEOPLE JUST RECENTLY THAT HE FELT FINE. HE WAS 82 YEARS OLD. ((MALLORY)) THE MOTHER OF A ONE YEAR OLD GIRL WHO DROWNED IN JULY áá HAS NOW BEEN ARRESTED IN CONNECTION TO HER DEATH. DANIELLE MITCHELL IS CHARGED WITH ENDANGERING THE WELFARE OF A MINOR. OFFICIALS SAY THERE WERE THREE TODDLERS IN MITCHELL’S CARE AT THE TIME.áááTWO OF THEM WERE HER CHILDREN. THE GIRL WAS FOUND IN A BATHTUB AND DIED AT THE HOSPITAL. ((MALLORY)) THE WHITE COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE ááá WORKING TO IDENTIFY A SUSPECT THEY SAY SHOT AT A DEPUTY. FOR SEVERAL HOURS MUTIPLE AGENICESááá INCLUDING STATE POLICE AND GAME AND FISHáááSEARCHED A FIELD NEAR MCRAE ABOUT 10 MILES SOUTH OF SEARCY. THE SHERIFF SAYS THEY WERE UNABLE TO FIND THE SUSPECT AND BELIEVES HE WAS ABLE TO GET A RIDE OUT OF THE AREA. LAST NIGHT A DEPUTY RESPONDED TO THE AREA IN REFERENCE TO TRESSPASSING. THE DEPUTY GOT OUT AND APPROACHED THE SUSPECTáááAS HE GOT CLOSE THE SUSPECT TOOK OFF RUNNING. THE SHERIFF SAYS AS THEY REACHED THE WOOD LINE AT THE EDGE OF THE FIELDáá THE DEPUTY OBSERVED WHAT HE BELIEVES WAS A SHOT FIRED FROM THE SUSPECT. ((MALLORY)) THIS MORNING áá LITTLE ROCK POLICE WERE INVESTIGATING A SHOOTING IN A POPULAR DOWNTOWN AREA. THEY BELIEVE THERE WAS AN EXCHANGE OF GUNFIRE AND AT LEAST ONE CAR WAS HIT BY THAT GUNFIRE. RIGHT NOW THERE ARE NO REPORTED INJURIES AND NO SUSPECTS. ((MALLORY)) A HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT TURNED INTO A HEATED DEBATE áá AFTER PARENTS SAY THEIR 8TH GRADERS WERE SENT HOME WITH POEMS THAT WERE INAPPROPRIATE. A TEACHER AT CROSSETT MIDDLE SCHOOL GAVE 8TH GRADERS SOME POEMS THAT INCLUDE PROFANITY AND SEXUAL CONTENT. PARENTS EXPRESSED CONCERN TO THE SCHOOL AND THE TEACHER ISSUED AN APOLOGY. SHE SAID SHE ACCIDENTALLY PRINTED OUT THE UNEDITED VERSION OF THE POEM áá BUT PARENTS ARE STILL FURIOUS. Rebekah Slackt/Parent “If my kids are going to be corrupted and my kids are going to be exposed to these kinds of things, I don’t feel like it should be in the public school system. That’s supposed to be our safe place.” SOME PARENTS WANT THE TEACHER TO BE REPRIMANDED áá AND WANT TO BE ASSURED YOUNGER CHILDREN WON’T BE TAUGHT THE SAME LESSONS. THEY PLAN ON BRINGING UP THE ISSUE AT THE NEXT SCHOOL BOARD MEETING. ((MALLORY)) GOOD NEWS IF YOU NEED TO FILL UP YOUR TANK! THE AVERAGE PRICE FOR GAS IS GOING DOWN. THE NATIONAL AVERAGE IS 2 DOLLARS AND 68 CENTS PRICES ARE GOING DOWN BECAUSE THERE’S NO GAS SHORTAGE áá AND THERE HASN’T BEEN A SPIKE IN CRUDE OIL PRICES LATELY. AND GET THISáááIF YOU ARE IN STUTTGART AT DODGE’S STORE YOU CAN FIND GAS AT A STATE LOW OF 2.09 ((MALLORY)) WE ARE NOW LEARNING THAT IT WILL COST A LITTLE OVER 6á MILLION DOLLARS FOR BENTON COUNTY TO RECOVER FROM LAST WEEK’S TORNADOES.
