QI Awards 2019 – Novel Delivery of Systemic Therapy to Enable Oncology Treatment Closer to Home

[soft music] QI Innovation Honourable Mention 2019 Novel Delivery of Systemic Treatment to Enable Oncology Treatment Closer to Home The Regional Systemic Treatment Program (RSTP) of the South East Regional Cancer Program faced challenges expanding its services to other facilities due to the resources required to deliver safe, high quality chemotherapy [picture of cancer centre] In 2016, the RSTP created a centralized pharmacy compounding process that allows for the transport of individually compounded chemotherapy treatments for patients from the Kingston Health Sciences Centre to two satellite sites within the region, Brockville General Hospital and Perth & Smiths Falls District Hospital. [pictures of doctor and patient in hospital] Since its implementation, over 2,000 treatments have been delivered to the satellite clinics. More patients now have the comfort of receiving treatment in their own community and avoid traveling farther to the regional cancer centre. The initiative is cost-effective, because two community hospitals are not required to create and sustain the pharmacy infrastructure required to deliver chemotherapy.
