breaking news tonight a major reversal the US grounds the 737 max Jets involved in a pair of deadly air disasters the move coming after days of intensifying pressure the new evidence that pushed the decision and tonight what it was like on those planes as they were grounded airlines scrambling passengers rushing to we booked a bomb cyclone of historic proportions a blizzard for the ages with hurricane-force wind gusts slamming eight states the National Guard called in to rescue drivers trapped on the highway a port of new fallout from that massive cheating scandal Full House star Lauri Lachlan surrendering to the FBI and anger growing among parents and students and say the system is broken and believe the rich and famous cheap to get ahead I'm sorry that you feel so entitled that you think that you deserve to take someone else's spot just because you have the means to afford it Paul Manafort hit with his second prison sentence then moments later hit with brand-new charges for alleged crimes that the president can't pardon put it gunman breaking into a Brazilian high school and opening fire at least seven students and teachers among the dead in a horrific attack and big health news tonight for millions at risk of a heart attack because of high cholesterol doctors reporting Anna promising new drug without the side effects of statins as NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt good evening everyone and welcome to our viewers in the West breaking tonight American Southwest and United Airlines are parking their 737 max aircraft and rebooking passengers this evening after the FAA today ordered the planes grounded in this country here's a map that shows 737 max jets in the air over the US right after President Trump announced the grounding order and here's what that map looks like tonight virtually empty the decision came hours after Canada grounded the planes leaving the u.s. virtually alone in standing by them concerns over the max intensifying after two fatal crashes under similar circumstances our team in place to cover the latest on the investigation and the impact on flyer starting with Tom Costello across the country today the minute 737 max flights landed they faced immediate grounding flights preparing to take off told to return to their gates the three airlines to fly the max in the u.s. Southwest American and United Airlines this FlightAware map showing max flights in US skies disappearing through the afternoon pilots have been notified airlines have been all notified airlines are agreeing with us the safety of the American people in all people is our paramount concern the u.s. grounded the max only after Canada and the rest of the world acted first but the FAA says its decision is based on evidence collected on the ground in Ethiopia and satellite data received from Ethiopian flight 302 before it crashed which showed very erratic vertical takeoff speeds as the pilots apparently struggled to control the plane similar to the lion air crash in Indonesia last October the CEO of Ethiopian Airlines talked to CNN we believe that the similarities are substantial they're both the same airplane model brand-new airplanes and also the flights were very short I think eight minutes in in the case of lion air and six minutes flight in our case tonight nearly four days after the crash Ethiopia has finally decided to send the damaged black boxes to France for analysis and we've not been able to get the boxes to a country where we can start pulling data a delay that some aviation veterans find unacceptable it's unconscionable of the black boxes this laid out after the crash I have not been looked at they will tell vital clues about the relationship to the Lyon aircraft meanwhile US pilots have also raised concerns about the 737 max and its flight manual submitting anonymous concerns to a federal database one copilot writing within two to three seconds the aircraft pitch nose down can't think of any reason the aircraft would pitch down so aggressively another pilot in November complaining the flight manual is inadequate and almost criminally insufficient Boeing is now pushing a software upgrade for the max fleet to fix issues with that anti-stall system that may have contributed to the Indonesia crash last October tonight the company says it supports temporarily grounding the fleet out of an abundance of caution and in order to reassure the flying public of the aircraft safety but how soon the max eight and nine fly again will likely depend on what investigators learn from the black boxes and a detailed analysis of the wreckage and Tom joining us now Tom typically we've seen groundings before typically a flaw is detected the airline's or told you fix it and then the plane could go back in the air what are they telling him this time then since there's no flaw that's formally been identified well the French investigative agency to begin with says it expects the black box is sometime tomorrow they're damaged so reviewing them could take some time listening carefully to the conversations between the pilots and then getting a readout on the flight data and that should include everything from engine performance to the plane's altitude airspeed heading pitch the rudder and flat positions all of that so identifying a potential problem could take days or weeks then the fix if there is one that could take weeks or even months it could be a while before these planes fly again Army Tom thanks for your reporting and tonight airlines that operate the max Jets are scrambling to update their flight schedules and minimize the impact from today's grounding and as Dan Gutierrez reports passengers ticket on these planes are rushing to rebook at airports across the u.s. late today the last Boeing 737 max eight and nine planes landed in a storm of controversy it's good to look into it and make sure that it's not something intrinsically wrong with the plane two US airlines use max eight Southwest and American United uses max nines Southwest as Max eight flights are spread throughout the country Americans are largely concentrated into and out of Miami between all three airlines there are about 275 daily flights using the max fleet it's a huge decision it's it has an economic effect you know that's that's that's far reaching today in Dallas the home of Southwest Airlines fliers reacted all this week they've been letting people change the tickets I think that's now many travelers and crew members wondering what's next back on the ground all three airlines are trying to minimize travel disruptions Southwest the most heavily impacted says any customers booked on a cancelled max a flight can rebook on alternate flights without any additional fees or fare differences within 14 days of their original date of travel safety first most important things it's a little scary to be up there when you know that this could be something wrong with the plane and while this is impacting thousands of customers Southwest says that the max eight planes only make up about four percent of its entire fleet United and American are now automatically rebooking customers on other flights right now cluster all right Gabe thank you very much and elsewhere causing further disruption with flights tonight what forecasters are calling bomb cyclone of historic proportions a blizzard for the record books hitting eight states the National Guard now being called in we get the latest from NBC's Steve Patterson tonight the Great Plains bracing for a hurricane strength blizzard across eight states wind gusts reaching 80 miles per hour in some areas up to feet of snow the National Weather Service reporting a rapid pressure drop resulting in a bomb a cyclone of historic proportions flight schedules are already scrambled runway shutdown more than a thousand flights canceled in Denver the highways have turned deadly Colorado state trooper Daniel Grove killed by a skidding car low visibility leading to pileups we can just take people what we can't blows The Weather Service warning do not even attempt to drive in the storm danger on the rails as well a New Mexico train derailed by wind no injuries reported and violent storms delivering destruction to an Amazon warehouse in Texas wind gusts moving at highway speeds up ending homes tossing planes like toys turning semis sideways spring is only a week away but this winter just doesn't know when to quit Steve Patterson NBC News and all that fresh snow could lead to more avalanches and an already deadly season in a few minutes we'll join an elite team blasting away the threat with some high-tech tools but right now I'm moving to the scandal it has so many outraged actress Lorie Lachlan granted a bail on 1 million dollars late today after she and dozens of other parents including fellow star Felicity Huffman were charged in a massive college admissions cheating scam NBC's Miguel Almaguer now with the latest after her arrest earlier today actress Lori Lachlan faced a federal judge the Hollywood star and her famous husband fashion designer Massimo Janu Lee who each posted a million dollar bond are accused of paying half a million dollars in bribes to get their daughters into USC I mean in complete denial two years ago on today Lachlan and her daughter spoke about attending college her youngest child a YouTube star blogged about going to USC I don't know how much of school I'm gonna attend with actress Felicity Huffman posting a two hundred and fifty thousand dollar bond last night the steps of the federal courthouse looked more like a movie premiere Huffman's husband William H Macy making no comment after federal investigators say his wife paid fifteen thousand dollars to a for a Proctor to secretly change answers on her older daughters SAT I'm sorry that you feel so entitled that you think that you deserve to take someone else's spot just because you have the means to afford it the list of 33 parents who investigators say rigged the system includes a stunning roster of wealthy executives a doctor and even a lawyer Manuel Henriques who stepped down today as CEO of a Silicon Valley hedge fund is accused of paying nearly half a million dollars to insure his daughter would attend Georgetown court documents say his wife and daughter gloated about the fact that they had cheated and gotten away with it I feel good as a parent because we didn't do that and my daughter got into Georgetown in all eight elite colleges are at the center of the scandal universities like Stanford and Yale have admission rates below 7% at all people just got caught this time Alex McLeod who was rejected from USC feels robbed I think the bigger issue is that our college admissions system isn't based on how hard you work it's not a meritocracy it's really based on the zip code you were born in and who your parents are and what they can give you insiders say the admission system is broken if parents with means can really game the system to this degree it's time to create a new system the alleged mastermind behind the scheme William singer who founded a college prep service is cooperating with investigators he says wealthy parents paid in more than 25 million dollars to cheat the system TMZ obtaining this video of his audition for a reality show on the pressures of getting kids into college this process brings out all the good and a lot of the bad that goes on in families homes tonight from the courthouse steps to the courtyards of college campuses outraged over how the rich and famous by their children couldn't earn the 50 people arrested will face a federal judge in Boston later this month as for those who were children who were still enrolled in school each University says they'll handle it differently you see for example says any student who is trying to get into their school and is involved in this scandal will be denied as for those already enrolled in the school they'll be handled on a case-by-case basis laughter all right Miguel Almaguer thank you tonight president Trump's former campaign chairman has been hit with a second prison sentence on top of the one from last week and moments after the judge read her decision Paul manna Ford was hit with new set of charges here's Pete Williams the man who helped get Donald Trump into the White House now faces almost 7 years in prison on top of the nine months he's already spent in jail seven and a half years in all on charges stemming from his political consulting in Ukraine seated in a wheelchair mana Ford said I'm sorry for what I have done and for all of the activities that have gotten us here today but Judge Amy Berman Jackson responded saying I'm sorry I got caught is not an inspiring plea for leniency he faced a maximum of ten years on the Washington DC charges but the judge added just three and a half years on to the 4-year sentence man affort got last week in Virginia I don't think it is overly lenient to federal judges have looked at it they have fashioned sentences that they believe are fair and appropriate he's going to go to jail for a long time Amanda Ford's lawyer called the sentence callous and harsh but said there was never any suggestion he helped Russia meddle in the election judge Jackson conceded that there was absolutely no evidence of any Russian collusion in this case metaphor might be hoping for a pardon and president Trump did not rule it out today it's not something that's right now in my mind I do feel badly for Paul Manafort that I can tell you but New York City's district attorney Cyrus Vance today quickly filed state charges accusing manna Ford of lying about his use of a Manhattan condo to get a more favorable loan even if mana Ford got a presidential pardon it would not count against a state conviction a president can pardon someone only for a federal crime Paul Manafort turns 70 April 1st that now appears he'll be at least 76 years old before he can get out of prison Lester on right Peter Williams in Washington thank you now to a horror we've come to know too well in this country a school shooting massacre it happened today near Brazil's largest city at Lee five students and two employees killed when two gunmen opened fire and Thompson now has the latest on a warning some of the images are disturbing one official called it unspeakably brutal school students in Brazil massacred during their snack break police say two young men wearing hoods armed with homemade bombs crossbows and guns opened fire we're children from elementary to high school age learn near Sao Paulo they just came out shooting at anyone who is close by the student says police say the gunman both former students took their own lives among the dead five students and two employees several others were injured the school worker says she opened the kitchen door rushing students to safety when they heard shots school shootings are rare in Brazil even though it's one of the world's most violent countries now the local governor has declared three days of mourning an Thompson NBC News and a crisis at another school to report this in Nigeria a desperate search for survivors after a building collapse as many as 100 children inside it's not clear how many may have died but dozens have been rescued from the rubble just ahead tonight with a blizzard bearing down this evening we go behind the scenes with the elite patrol targeting avalanches that big news of they're battling high cholesterol and the young unknowns starring in one of Broadway's biggest fashion tonight's blizzard in Denver is raising new safety concerns in an unprecedented season for avalanches that have killed 22 people our gaudy shorts went out with an elite team using high-powered technology to target the threat it is one degree at the top of Snowbird ski resort in Utah the wind is howling the hike is grueling then the pull the fuse far no explosive as that looks this is a rare glimpse at a morning routine happening at ski resorts across the West Ski Patrol blasting away avalanches before they strike on their own and their arsenal is impressive so this looks pretty intense what's this thing this is one of our air launchers it's a night to decompress cannon that shoots an explosive high onto the slope you see you're literally blasting explosives up on the mountain from here and that's not all from helicopters to howitzers it is a constant battle to keep the slope safe what would happen if you guys weren't out here detonating explosives every day you know there would be no way that the ski resort open safely without an aggressive Avalanche control program this year heavy snowfall bringing severe Avalanche threats all throughout the nation's largest mountain ranges over 1,000 avalanches recorded in January alone this winter 22 people killed others rescued like this skier who was dug out of the backcountry just five miles away from snow burn but for those out patrolling the slopes the goal isn't about stopping the power of Mother Nature instead its to control it so that everyone else can enjoy the outdoors daddy Schwartz NBC News Snowbird Utah and hats off to them that's important work up next important news and the fight John Torres one in four Americans takes cholesterol-lowering drugs called statins they work but often cause painful side effects primarily muscle pain jack manley says he could barely walk when he was on the medication if it's very discomforting yeah it was constant like leg cramps now a new study in today's New England Journal of Medicine is reporting than an experimental medication called been Bedoya acid taken along with a statin reduced cholesterol by 18 percent this medicine could help a lot of people many people can't take a high dose of a powerful statin so particularly we use combinations two medications sometimes lower doses to get the same effect Jack took the drug along with his low dose statin as part of a clinical trial girl his cholesterol is now down nearly 100 points and he says he's feeling better than ever I want to be able to enjoy my grandchildren so it's very important the drug is now under FDA review and could be approved early next year it's expected to cost thirty five hundred a year dr. 2. What about Wicked Hillary Clinton and all she has done,i know its a felony. But no she makes her own laws! And gets away with it!!!

  3. It may be an interference with the Boeing auto pilot, due to the government using remote controlled drones to spray the Chemtrails in the sky.

  4. interesting how America was the last one to grounded that junk plane wonder if it has to do with the business relationship between the US military and Boeing the US was worried more about the stock price and losing lots and lots of money clearly Boeing is trying to down play the problems at the cost of human life and i would bet both the US and Boeing are in damage control and will blame, mislead, and pretty much lie in every way to cover up the problems they dont care about your life they care about bad press and lost revenue once again America shows corporate interest and profit is way more important then Americans life's

  5. Why is the national news not covering the massive flooding in Nebraska 😡 60,000 people evacuated from their homes. Much of the infrastructure across the entire state is gone! No traveling in much of the state! Bridges across major roads gone! Many many smaller bridges and roads are washed away. We are in an emergency situation! And the national news has barely covered it! We are feeling like the rest of the country is not carrying about us. We are the forgotten state. It’s a good thing we the people of Nebraska are built strong. We are taking care of our own!!! But we are upset because we are largely being ignored by the national news!😡😡😡

  6. Lori..your daughter clearly stated on tube how she hates school..
So were you hoping she might grow up to be an adult in college?
Party kid and nothing more than a spoiled brat..You failed in this parenting point..
I feel sorry for your loss of respect from the public..
    Shame

  7. Already enrolled and your parents bribed to get them in the university, your gonna handle it by a case by case basis???
    They should be expelled!!!

  8. Computers flying airplanes with human supervision is awesome, until a situation like this pokes its head up, I beleive Boeing will sort this out it is just sad so many people has to suffer.

  9. Woman, “I’m scared because of what’s going on with the news” wtf the news is not crashing these planes to create news. Ignorant people in America.

  10. Wow, I cant belive it, all this is scandels are going on, ever since President took Office. When Obama was in Office none of this happen. Now with that WORLD CLOCK THAT CLICK S, to fear of end of world, PROBLEMS with Police, Corruption, Maddoff, Banks, everyone is on lose . Runpage, turning pages of lives, no one seems to OBEY,

  11. Notice the difference between this situation and the one involving commuter trains and freight trains. The inherent problems that to this day exist in railroads do not get the same response. Same old same old.

  12. Thanks CNN for reporting this, most likely this is also how our president managed an education. It's clear he was never really capable.

  13. Aren’t we supposed to be living like the jetsons by now with all the antigravity technology they are holding back from us?

  14. You put Manafort's lawer on the air and let him lie outright and yet you made it a point to avoid revealing the protestor's overwhelming objections yelling "that's a lie, that's NOT what she said!". I heard the transcript my self. Shame on you for going out of your way to propagate more lies and stifle the truth.I actually used to trust NBC.

  15. If you are worried for economic effect then you go and sit in it moron. People safety is first. Flights should not be certified with out proper testing

  16. Boeing 737 can be hacked through the flight computer and the internet ask Israel about it. once the pilot turns on autopilot it cannot be turned off with hack.

  17. Boycott American colleges…go to Europe and other places to get a degree..the U.S. education system is so f#cked up.

  18. Was on a 737 a month ago…the take off and landing was lousy…in both trips…delta flights between Seattle and Denver. You could feel the plane droop at 13000 to 10000 feet …the pilots having to compensate quite a bit
