Nightly News Broadcast (Full) – June 28, 2019 | NBC Nightly News

tonight the dramatic fall out from our fiery first debate Joe Biden on defense after the blistering attack from breakout candidate Kamala Harris I was actually very it was hurtful going after the former vice president on the issue of race she was bused to school every day and that little girl was me tonight to perceive winners and the new freshens how much did this debate shake up the race a harrowing rescue at the border a drowning migrant teen plucked from the waters of the Rio Grande Border Patrol agents performing CPR saving his life president Trump face to face of the g20 with Vladimir Putin warning him with a grin not to meddle in the 2020 election we're in Japan traveling with the president the major the development of the case of a missing Utah college student a SWAT team guns drawn arresting a suspect on murder and kidnapping charges tonight police still searching for a motive the big break in the shooting of baseball legend David Ortiz suspected mastermind arrested facetiming his family as a second suspect attempting to flee to Puerto Rico captured on his getaway boat this is NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt good evening ears are still ringing tonight after what was by far the most memorable moment in last night's Democratic presidential debate the searing exchange between Kamala Harris and Joe Biden over race both of them quickly back on the campaign trail today Harris tried to capitalize at what many pundits saw as a strong performance by the front-runner on the defense after Harris and others say their sharpest arrows of the night for him the candidates fighting it out as much about the past as they are the future Hallie Jackson starts our coverage he's argued for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris another split screen moment today she in South Florida talking immigration he in Chicago talking about her respect senator Harris but you know we all know that 30 seconds to 60 seconds on the campaign debate exchange can't do justice to a lifetime committed to civil rights I never never never ever opposed voluntary busing Biden's defense if his civil rights record comes after the most dramatic and defining moment of the Democratic primary season so far and I'm gonna now direct this at Vice President Biden Harris confronting him over his comments about working with segregationist senators decades ago and calling out his past position on busing to desegregate public schools in the 70s I do not believe you are a racist and I agree with you when you commit yourself to the importance of finding common ground but I also believe and it is personal and I was actually very it was hurtful to hear you talk about the reputations of two United States senators who built their reputations and career on the segregation of race in this country and it was not only that but you also worked with them to oppose busing and you know there was a little girl in California who was part of the second class to integrate her public schools and she was bused to school every day and that little girl was me her campaign tweeting this image this character raised my position across the board I did not praise racist that is not true number one number two if we want to have this campaign litigated on who supports civil rights and whether I did or not I'm happy to do that do you agree today that you were wrong to oppose busing in America though do you agree I did not oppose busing in America what I opposed is busing ordered by the Department of Education is your city council made that decision [Applause] that's why we need to press the ER a because there are moments in history where states fail to preserve the civil rights of rfg 40 I'm the guy that extended the Voting Rights Act for 25 years I've also argued very strongly that we in fact deal with the notion of the 9 people access to the ballot box I agreed that everybody once they and faddish and my times up on saw the former vice president the night's biggest target we're gonna solve the issues of climate chaos pass the torch I'm still a whole lot of that torch Democrats divided on Medicare for all senator Bernie Sanders arguing the cost is worth it yes they will pay more in taxes but less in health care for what they get and after this show of hands raise your hand if covered if your government plan would provide coverage for undocumented immigrants President Trump pouncing tweeting how about taking care of American citizens first that's the end of that race and that clip we just showed those 10 candidates on stage showing support of health care coverage for undocumented immigrants get ready to see that many more times over the next year and a half with Republicans already seizing on it as a campaign issue lester pally Jackson at the White House tonight thanks and Biden spent part of today as we noted at the top defending his record on civil rights after that powerful attack from Harris NBC's Jeff Bennett has a closer look at that decades-old busing controversy has taken on a whole new relevance in this race it's a new flashpoint for the early Democratic frontrunner it's a constitutional question to protect the civil rights of every single American and that's always been my position at that same event civil rights leader Jesse Jackson choosing sides and Joe Biden's showdown with Senator Kamala Harris and it wasn't Biden's come to Harris last night right busing for racial balance it all centers on the controversy over Biden's decades-old push to put the brakes on busing to integrate the country's public schools in the 1970s certain school districts under federal supervision began busing black students to majority white schools and some white students to mostly black ones a policy aimed at achieving the promise of equality in the education system decades after the Supreme Court struck down school segregation Biden's record now under scrutiny for suggesting the federal government should have a limited role in integration Biden telling a Delaware newspaper in 1975 he didn't buy the concept that in order to even the score we must now give the black man a head start or even hold the white man back to even the race I don't buy that Biden today touting his record I fought my heart out to ensure the civil rights and voting rights equal rights are enforced everywhere Harrison's showdown with Biden is raising fresh questions about his standing among african-american voters which is key to his frontrunner status Lester alright Jeff thanks and now that we have heard from the candidates these last two evenings we wanted to hear from the voters our Gotti's Schwartz spoke with some today to get their reaction to this debate at a bus stop on the south side of Chicago today the talk is politics 100 year old Beatrice Lumpkin watched both debates we were you leaning towards right now between well Sanders I loved Warren – Sanders and Warren Elaine Carmichael had been leaning towards Joe Biden and Elizabeth Warren but after last night I think I need to stick with comment below and now let's head north to Wisconsin key battleground state and where the Democrats are gonna hold their convention exam and in a small city of Kenosha how was everything we found 52 year-old undecided Democrat Janice Barnhill who's owned the coffee pot for 14 years what were the policies that you are looking for health care is big health care health there's real big why cuz I was diagnosed with breast cancer back in October Janice is worried about a hundred and fifty thousand dollar medical bill and headed a radiation treatment just after our interview did anybody impress him Harris and @lc Mays pie shop down the street a similar sentiment out of all those people who do you think could go up against President Trump I feel like Harris definitely could but from nineteen-year-old independent augustiner boss whose top concern is national security after last night's debate I was no friend trauma of course with more than a year till the election there is still plenty of debate to come Ngati Schwartz NBC News Kenosha Wisconsin and let's turn now to another major story were following the crisis at our border tonight new video of our dramatic rescue is showing the risk so many migrants tank with their lives when they attempt to cross into the US illegally NBC's Gabe Gutierrez is at the border on that boat in the distance is a rescue mission Border Patrol agents performing CPR on a thirteen-year-old migrant from Honduras it wasn't breathing after trying to swim across the Rio Grande and Eagle Pass Texas but he survived this child would have died had it not been for the quick life-saving actions by the border two agents hundreds of migrants died each year along the border either in stifling heat in the desert or in the water this is the most dangerous time of year for migrants just look at the current on that canal there's the heat more rain and irrigation season for farmers making it extremely risky to try and cross that water the rapid surge in migrants over the past year has stretched the resources of agents like Frank Pinot who spends a lot of his time caring for women and children that's what's hard for us to see when the kids suffer because she doesn't know what she's actually doesn't know why she's here in Juarez Mexico Esperanza Palomino is weighing whether to finish that journey her family is at a shelter after escaping violence in El Salvador but she'll have to wait in Mexico for at least six months before her US Asylum case is processed here she says were fleeing from a problem and were scared she's considering going back to Central America even though she fears for her life the Border Patrol chief here in El Paso says about half of his agents are now caring for those in custody instead of patrolling the border itself Lester Gutierrez in El Paso thank you the Supreme Court has agreed to take up the future of the Obama era daca program that has allowed thousands of young undocumented immigrants to remain in this country the court will decide whether President Trump can shut it down Pete Williams is at the court tonight Pete what can you tell us Lester daca is short for deferred action for childhood arrivals and it lets children of immigrants who came here illegally stay in the u.s. if they were under 16 when their parents brought them here it has allowed 700 thousand young people avoid deportation go to college and get jobs two years ago President Trump tried to shut it down but federal courts ordered the government to keep the program going now the Supreme Court says it will take up the trumpet ministry appeal of those orders the program will keep going until the court rules which will probably be a year from now assuring that daca will figure in the presidential campaign Lester all right Pete thanks meantime tonight President Trump remains overseas of the g20 summit in Japan and making some waves during a meeting with Vladimir Putin when pressed about confronting Putin over election interference our Kristen Welker is there president Trump meeting face to face with Russian President Vladimir Putin for the first time since the Muller report was released the report detailed Russian meddling in the 2016 election the president was asked would he press Putin about Russia's behavior the president smiling Putin smiling two moments earlier Russian TV captured the two leaders joking about the media while the Muller report concluded there was no conspiracy between the Trump campaign and Russia the special counsel did find Russia mounted a sweeping and systematic operation to influence the election on behalf of mr. Trump intelligence officials recently warning it could happen again we expect Russia will continue to wage its information war against democracies and to use social media to attempt to divide our societies the Senate's top Democrat blasting the president's comments Americans will lose faith in their democracy and this president jokes at it it's appalling it's disgraceful and tonight former President Jimmy Carter unleashing this bombshell suggesting he does not think President Trump is legitimate and I think the inner French although not yet quantified I have fully investigated with show that's from then actually win the election in 2016 that comes just days after President Trump praised Carter on NBC noting that Carter has defended him in the past Carter even offered to work with him on North Korea Lester Kristen Welker in Japan tonight thanks back home there are major developments in the mystery surrounding a missing college student in Utah and it's not the news so many get hope 1. Can't we have more diversity. Not enough raping, murdering, cannibalistic "immigrants" to vote for baby-killing, raping, murdering pedophillic Democrats.
Bring in more, preferably with AIDS and Ebola. Syphilis, malaria, schistosomiasis, cholera, etc. that's "depth and diversity".

  2. I'm absolutely for totally free healthcare for all illegal invaders in our prisons. Quarantine, diagnosis, treatment, serve 10 years, and go back where they came from.
Free healthcare, room and board for every illegal immigrant, invader, terrorist, undocumented slave laborer and their "employers" for a minimum of ten years, before being forcibly repatriated or executed.

  3. Oh, McKenzie, why were you allured to this psycho? Poor baby, teach your children to be safe!! Do not go and meet with strangers……………………!

  5. I find it insane how bad the news are. They seriously just ask random people about the debates. No data, polls, experts or anything. Reminds me of a nyt article about the chinese moon project in which the had "a lady in a cafe in beijing" as only source about how chinese people felt about it. How is this even considered news?

  6. They gave the election to the Republicans as soon as they all raised their hands for free healthcare for illegals. 🤦‍♂️

  7. Can someone explain to me what’s this bussing all about? You are gettting a free ride you morons! What’s bad about that?

  8. Inez Thorpe/ Qtaish will never sign no contract for settlement or compromise and no deals, the truth will be reveal publicly about what happened in inez Qtaish Illinois worker's compensation case with nothing redacted at the illinois supreme court hearing, I will not stop , I want the truth reveal publicly so my name can be cleared, all people know the truth about inez Thorpe/ Qtaish reveal publicly and say my name.

  9. people who can’t swim will try to cross rivers going directly across, smart people cross high current rivers by going in a diagonal direction WITH the current arriving downstream from the starting point….. just saying

  10. The biggest idiots were given the most time, and the best candidate was given the least (Yang). MSM is trash.

  11. Isn*t it time for the Old Man to tie that giant shark to the side of his little boat and show everyone the giant menace he solved. Remember Ernest Hemingway and The Old Man and the Sea? This story is big and a few rogue FBI agents ARE that giant shark and they REFUSE to cooperate with any task force to reestablish justice and moral order. Who is Lawrence ODonnell and why should he be removed from the MSNBC network?

  12. Harris was the star???? How about how she slept her way to the top???? Do some research, its not hard to find.

  13. Its obvious that what Harris did was staged and that she counted in part on the average person's ignorance of how things work in government. She counted on the fact that many people don't especially understand the difference between a decision made by the county of a state and what is federally mandated. She intentionally mis-characterized Biden's decision in the past events she was referring to .

  14. We are a republic we are not a democracy the word does not exist in the United States Constitution! So we are nationalist of our country not Democratic Socialist!

  15. He was listening to a reporter and he was joking around when he told Putin that! Stop twisting the truth! This is all for fun!

  16. It’s just old people who are still using race not the younger generation, but why is racism on African Americans still a issue, those days of slavery have been gone for a long time ago geez tired of the wining

  17. Free medical care for everyone including the illegals that's coming out of your pocket! Climate change extremely high taxes coming out of your pocket! The loss of many corporations where will all the next money come from you won't have any in your pocket! The standard of Medical Care in the United States will go down! You will not be able to afford Medical Care it won't be here you will pay triple the amount that you cannot afford out of your pocket! large medical centers will not be able to stay in business! Going after the insurance companies who cover you they won't remain in business! you won't even be able to afford to go to the doctor the taxes will be so high on the gasoline and the gas will be so high do these taxes for climate change you won't have any money in your pocket you will have to take the bus train and bike which they all plan to do with the substainable living.

  18. Climate change enormous taxes, and then penalties for riding in your car will soon follow, the loss of jobs and big corporations, taxes applied to gasoline will be so high you won't be able to afford to ride in a car. Substainable living, green New Deal, this is the United Nations Global one world order, guidelines for the world which is supposed to start taking place in 2021. Which W George Bush all the way to Obama was highly speaking about! No borders part of the United Nations agenda 21 agenda 30 and agenda 63. W George Bush, was there for the signing the 1992 agreement United Nations one world order under 180 Nations signed.
flood all of the countries with millions of immigrants agreed upon by 164 Nations just recently! Once all the countries are flooded with all these immigrants in the Millions there will be no Sovereign countries for Nations left we will all be diverse and easier to control as they take us off our land, confiscate our guns and pushes into cities that are designated to live in Stack & pack housing. Canada signed and so did Mexico, but the United States did not have to because they can just jump over the border and plead Asylum. I'm not making this up it's out there are some great books on Agenda 21 agenda 30 and agenda 63 that all these countries signed. there's some really old videos on YouTube that will explain things to you better, many have been taken down! Conspiracy theory they call it but that's not what they all signed. I'm a Democrat, and each and every one of them up there in these last two debates made me want to throw up! they are catering to literally the millions of illegal immigrants and the ones that are undocumented and the Latin community so that they will not only get their votes to vote in a Democratic president but to win every future election! I see the Democratic Party no longer for The Working Man, they should have addressed themselves as they are a Socialist Party!

  19. Democrats gonna force another Cookie cutter corporate democrat down our throats and lose to trump again.

  20. Emotions to argue with blame and excuses or leadership with solutions they're working on themselves with results to share and explain?

Huge difference between settling a wilderness, and being welcomed for good company to keep and respect.
