Microsoft PowerApps Spring 2018 Update

Microsoft PowerApps Spring 2018 Update

hi welcome to my latest video blog today
I’d like to talk to you about perhaps the 2018 spring release and what that
means for you so my name is Andrew Ly I’m a Business Solutions MVP I’ve got quite a
lot to cover today so run through what I’ve got really really quickly so
Microsoft talked about the digital feedback loop digital feedback loop and
includes customers people and products and being able to use technology to
incorporate that whole internal life cycle so Microsoft currently have their
major applications such as sales marketing talent and so forth however
they may not be suitable for all of your needs as a customer in which case you’re
you’re likely to resort to building custom line of business applications so
Microsoft have made this that last mile of that journey a lot easier through the
use of power-ups and power bi so this is known as the business applications
platform so power apps is is useful rapid application development power bi
is used for intelligence and insights machine learning that sort of stuff
underpinning these technologies is actually to two services one called
common data service for apps and one called common data service for analytics
okay so they’re the main CVS services that
make that possible underpinning all of that is the common
data model or CDM which gives you a consistent scheme of all your business
data Charles Lamanna was talking recently on
the podcast at the the opportunity here is massive and Microsoft betting big on
this and so you know CES 2 will be the platform going forward for all
integration and customization in Dynamics 365 and office 365 and last I
checked the commercial monthly active users account is around 120 million
people at the moment so that’s pretty big and he continues on by saying that
half the monthly active user workload is dynamics and the other half is non
dynamics workload and that that non half is actually growing quicker than
dynamics half so they’re a huge opportunity for everyone here who’s been
around the dynamics area for a long long time so let me talk specifically about
what’s coming or what has actually just been released so this was power apps
probably a couple of months ago so power-ups out on top of the common data
service and to actually get data into there you’d actually have to integrate
our so for instance Dynamics F&O and dynamics customer engagement you’d
actually have to flow data into the common data service before you could use
it that’s all changed now with the spring release of power-ups and CVS to
see ds2 has now actually have been uplifted I guess if you like to the
Dynamics 365 customer engagement core which is XR and if you think about it so
all your accounts and contacts and all your business data are already there
there is no integration it is the backend okay Evernote isn’t quite there
yet and we’ll talk about that shortly so it’s the same technology in the same
codebase and I’ll talk to you about what that actually means for you because it
does mean a lot more capability is coming to this platform it’s already
started if you open up Dynamics 365 and you’ve gone to customize an entity you
would have seen the power apps logo on there that’s by design
it’s actually it is becoming one of the same now so perhaps a little bit later
this year don’t have a definite timeframe but essentially finance and
operations will have native integration into Cydia stew and they have dual write
capability so that means use your contacts your accounts your sales your
orders and so forth will be automatically written or dual written to
the CES 2 platform making it available for any application you build into the
future and not all your data is going to be in the Microsoft land and and the
first wave of templates they’ll be available for integration will include
Salesforce app workday that sort of thing to make things a lot easier so
let’s go on to the new features so what’s included powerup studio for web
so the the desktop version which may have used in the past it will be
deprecated by June the first 20 2018 so that means they’re moving everything to
to the web that’s going to be the premiere experience for configuring your
your canvas based applications and there’s been a lot of performance
improvements that have been made to this next you’ll have server-side logic which
has been available we are natively in Dynamics 365 for a long time and they’ll
include things like business rules workflows plugins connectors to other
data sources that sort of stuff other features are worth noting this is a
native SharePoint upload facility now there’s also more deployment support
through PowerShell GDP is just around the corner and it will be cheap GPR
compliant if you like have managed all through the office 365 Security
Administration Center talking about security you do get that same granular
access control that you’ll get through Dynamics 365 so the ability to create
roles and then limit the access to to data within your environments the
limitations involve while power ups may respect those rules that may still allow
you to put attributes on a canvas app it’s just that when you actually use it
happen you may not be able to see that data there’s a few things that need to
be sorted out still but it is coming being all cloud based you do get that
enterprise-grade Central Management and that includes the integration of is your
Active Directory the unified admin center data loss prevention compliance
and security and very Intune mobile device management so let’s talk a little
bit about the ways you can now build power apps so you have the traditional
canvas which allows you to have that pixel-perfect
app that you build and then what’s new is this model driven app model driven
app is actually the Dynamis unified interface and allows you to build your
data first your data schema first and then work up from there build your views
your dashboards your business process flows around that so model driven app is
a really good way to go especially when you don’t want to be designing
of screens you know that essentially could be built on the fly by by your
data there is of course a platform only SKU which is essentially a naked xrm so
you can get an instance of xrm which is just has your core entities if you like
in their example where you might want to do this is if you want to design a build
a mobile app and you just want to use the api’s that available in dynamics or
or sidious to are going to get used to saying that how so it’s an it’s an
abstract platform if you like and call components such as the resource a
unified resource scheduling will be available for you you use so pulling it
all together at the bottom here we’ve got the common data model witching and
the core includes accounts teams I think there’s 54 entities in total so it’s
just a stripped out version of xrm if you like you’ve got the common data
service which underpins that model that we talked about a bit earlier and now
moving to this solution or app based offering so you’ve got your first party
apps by Microsoft such as sales service marketing as well as ISV to be able to
build their apps on top of this so what does the roadmap look like so the custom
control framework we’re finally going to be able to build custom controls embed
them in canvas all model driven apps and even be able to drop a canvas app
directly into an office or a dynamics scenario solution packaging of course
has been a stable dynamics for a very long time but Microsoft internally are
shifting to solutions for their all the apps that they’ll be publishing into the
future and also talking about publishing you can actually get your apps that
you’ve got make them generic and then put them on to the app source
store which would be really good massive opportunity their integration will have
a lot of power query type experience if you use power query many of us –
especially if you have a latest version of Excel or word sorry exhale you’ll
know power query already so migration to the new platform
is going to be transparent that’s the first party Microsoft app you won’t
notice a thing you’ll just be on cbs2 for everyone else will be a migration
wizard so just a simple wizard to actually step you through the process
and if you’re a dynamics customer currently you would have been upgraded
to 9:02 which is CBS 8 or CBS version 2 so I mean so many monikers right now in
terms of Licensing really quickly if you’re an O 365 or a day 365 user it’s
already included if you just want to consume power apps then seven US per per
user per month from the makers it’s 40 per user per month on on the P to plan
but I shouldn’t stop you getting started right now after this you can just go
straight to get a get a free environment to use through the power ups community
plan so I highly recommend that just to finish off some places you might on the
internet your mole and check out the power apps blog there’s a lot of useful
information there the ideas and also just get started go on the web perhaps
site so good luck enjoy enjoy the rest of your day
and I’ll catch you later
