Greetings APWU members! This is my fourth
update on interest arbitration for a new union contract. We just completed three
more days of hearings in late October. Management argued that APWU members are
overpaid and receive benefits that are too generous. They again showed their
contempt for you and your hard work. Their witnesses faced effective cross
examination from the APWU lead counsel. Union witnesses shared the need for
expanded postal services, a detailed job analysis and the scope and skill of our
jobs. a panel of four PSEs eloquently testified to the unique
hardships they face. Earlier in the process the union presented a series of
worker panels from the Clerk, Motor Vehicle, and Maintenance crafts. Assistant
Clerk Craft Director Lynn Pallas-Barber testified to the need for guaranteed
hours for PTFs and regular schedule for PTFs and PSEs alike.
The next hearing dates are scheduled for mid-November when a well respected
economic team will counter management’s outrageous economic proposals and
demands and the craft directors will counter management’s negative work role
proposals. We then expect the hearings to be completed and for the arbitration
panel to begin their deliberations for the final award.
We are on target for a new union contract by the end of the year or early
in the new year. In the meantime, brothers and sisters,
stay union strong and proud as we continue Fighting Today for a Better
Tomorrow. Thank you.
