Leadership and the ACC: Developing leaders to transform cardiovascular care and improve heart health

I saw a patient of mine who I took care of during the time she was pregnant delivered her her baby and she's been very Ilyn but we were able to get her through and she survived it as did the baby and so her daughter's 13 years old now and when I asked her do you know how your mother and I know each other and she said well yeah you saved her life I was in college and I was interested in electrical things and the two organs that are electric or the brain and the in the heart and I went to the heart I don't think I'd actually be sitting here in this chair if it wasn't for tennis I ended up finishing Medical School teaching tennis whenever I could I would have my tennis clothes under my white coat okay run teach a lesson then come back and finish rounds or whatever it was that I was doing well we started we really had such a small arsenal things that we could do and now throughout my career we've developed the science of beta blockers and ACE inhibitors and ARBs and all of these things to really improve patients quality of life this is where our science comes from there can be no more important way to transform cardiovascular care then through developing our next generation of leaders we are developing opportunities that didn't exist for us 15 and 20 years ago and I think the only thing that they can do is seize the opportunity when the Board of Trustees decided to change the the governance and the leadership structure of the college they made the board smaller and more strategic and that opened up the the chairs of multiple committees this is such a great opportunity for leadership development and leadership succession it's very exciting so I've seen no better time to be a great deal leader in the college than now you hear that statement while I'm standing on the shoulders of this person I'm standing that's great but sometimes those leaders are so big and ACC has so so many big leaders I can't even climb up on their shoulders what the Leadership Academy does is say you can't be one of those people it's important to try and seek opportunities you won't get them all but it's okay unless you put your name out there it's not gonna happen I went to one of the camps that the ACC has put ah being led by CA severe as the meeting ended I remember thinking myself should I go and say something to him or not or I want to be more involved what do I do and I just walked up and said hello in my cart and I had really no other experience and nothing else to put forth besides the fact that I want to be more involved the next day I got an email from him with different opportunities and became part of a working group and that led to many things that that I wouldn't have done had I not just spoken up belonging to the ACC is going to equip you with so much of what you need it's going to equip you with the science that you need leadership training education regarding advocacy it's going to equip you with just a whole network of people to help move you forward whatever your leadership goals are you don't have to have just one mentor who serves all your needs as a mentee you really have to kind of look around and target a mentor depending on the situation you're in dr. Kovacs I was explaining to him a project that I was working on and he he let me do my jumping around I get very passionate and he calmly shook his head and looked at me with that small grin keep it simple I love the grand scope but focuses so that you can get a deliverable out that's all he said and it's done so much for me I was able to go to my home health system and the leadership there and convince them that value is an area that we need to invest in because of the knowledge that I have and the skills that I've developed through the ACC been able to make an incredible impact on our health system and ultimately the patients in my hometown can you come in an organization like this you suggest things and you listen people realize that your suggestions really have value I'm in my late 70s and I still learn something every day if I don't I'm disappointed as an everyday cardiologist I see one patient at a time but with my roles within ACC I can impact masses of people transform cardiovascular care and improve heart health that is something that stimulates each one of us as leaders until the heart disease is completely gone we're gonna keep going after it we're always stimulated to to try and do more
