who's ready for a job my name is Bennett Mario I'm an employment counselor with step-up Wilmington and step-up Wilmington is a nonprofit that offers free job readiness training and job placement services to anyone in the surrounding community so our work focuses on working with individuals who may have some barriers to employment things may be like age transportation criminal background substance use different things like that I first came to step-up in March of 2018 I was recently unemployed and was having trouble finding something stable that was gonna be able to pay the bills so after several months of job searching you know in a new city without transportation and I was just struggling to find that next opportunity throughout my own job search I came across the program and I saw some of the great work that they were doing helping people get back to work and I saw a lot of people with the same challenges that I faced having success others faced challenges such as homelessness or being recently released and I just decided to give it a shot I started out just being as actively engaged in the program as I could and over time something just clicked and I realized that this was the work that I wanted to be doing and at the time they had an opening I talked to the program manager applied and was fortunate enough to be brought on the team I really enjoy what I do now and I'm lucky to be able to get to do it alongside some of the people that were able to help me get to where I am now and it's great to be in a position where I can help people who find themselves in a position that not too long ago was the same position I was in I get to see people from all walks and all backgrounds of life and I get to be there with them through what can be a difficult journey unemployment is just a point in time in somebody's life and being able to be that cheerleader for them and provide them the resources that they may need or that that extra push that they they don't have from somebody else being able to be there for them during that period of time is just extremely rewarding we believe that a job can impact 10 lives and we set a goal of that over the next four years we want to place a thousand jobs I mean that's that's an impact of ten thousand lives which is going to be pretty strong in this community so our goal is to do that and make this entire community really feel the power of step up Wilmington
