Hip-Hop’s Love For Bobby Shmurda | Genius News

[HOST] If there is one incarcerated rapper
that hip-hop can agree on, it’s Brooklyn’s Bobby Shmurda. [HOST] The song led to a major label deal,
a viral dance done by everyone from Rihanna to Beyonce, a Billboard Hot 100 Top 10 hit
and a lingering question– where’d his hat go? [HOST] But it also was the beginning of the
end. [REPORTER] Police arrested Shmurda and others
yesterday at a Manhattan recording studio. [REPORTER] Police say Ackquille Pollard, known
as Bobby Shmurda, is part of a street gang that was behind several shootings one fatal
during turf fights over drug trafficking. [HOST] In December 2014, Bobby and his crew
GS-9, fellow rapper Rowdy Rebel, were arrested and charged with a slew
of crimes – most notably attempted murder. [HOST] In 2016, Shmurda pled guilty to a lesser
charge and was sentenced to 7 years in prison, taking a few extra years for his compatriot
Rowdy saying quote. [HOST] “They said the only way they’ll give
him seven is if I took seven, too. So, you know, I had to take one for the dawgs.” [HOST] Shmurda is slated to be released in
2020, but hip-hop has kept his name relevant to the tune of dozens of mentions. [HOST] Amongst the most common reference is
saying ‘Free Bobby,’ something NBA YoungBoy Young Thug and 21 Savage
have all mentioned. [HOST] At times they’re referencing one
of the most iconic lines from his song, “Hot Nigga.” [HOST] This is something mentioned by Tory
Lanez, Remy Ma & Rich Homie Quan. [HOST] Vic Mensa & Uncle Murda rapped about
Bobby’s trouble securing bail in 2015. [HOST] But possibly one of the most common
are references to his disappearing hat from “Hot Nigga’”’s music video. [CHOPPA] How he through the hat up and it never came down? This was a little line I felt was a bar. You know what I’m sayin? I fuck with that line. Imagine me and’ Bobby on a song. That shit crazy. [HOST] Bobby is reportedly slated to be out
in 2020 and it’s clear that hip-hop will welcome him with open arms. [HOST] I’m Jacques Morel with Genius News,
bringing you the meaning and the knowledge behind the music. Peace!

  1. Bobby shmurda is about to get a longer sentence when 6ix9ine says he paid him with drug money for that freestyle on the jail phone

  2. Call me old fashioned but something doesn't sit right with me about getting more time added to a sentence just to reduce time on someone else's. Mad respect to him for doing it but tf kind of legal negotiation is that

  3. seems almost disrespectful to play a 69 song when bobby literally took more time for rowdy instead of just snitching on everyone
