The Salt Lake area Mountains are under an avalanche watch right now with very dangerous avalanche conditions Expected to develop within the next 24 hours a local snowboard instructor Just finished a video about backcountry skiing danger Fox 13 s dora shy del Just spoke with him about the five red flags of avalanches. She joins us from Little Cottonwood Canyon, Dora well Bob and hope L3 certified snowboard instructor Blake Tholen Clark tells me he came up with the idea after watching the news and seeing all of the avalanche warnings So he decided to team up with the Utah Avalanche Center to make sure his fellow boarders and skiers are properly prepared But before they ride out to head to ride on fresh powder Blake Tholen Clark knows all about the thrill of Fresh snow But feels obligated as a snowboard instructor to warn his fellow backcountry thrill-seekers about avalanche warnings clark teamed up with Craig Gordon of the Utah Avalanche Center And they came up with the top five red flags of avalanches number one may sound obvious But the experts say the biggest clue to avalanches is avalanches themselves number, two Cracking or collapsing of the snow number three is strong winds Four is heavy snow and number five a rapid rise in temperatures. We see any of these signs Clark says It’s just not worth the risk when you’re out in a powder field, and there’s no tracks, It’s it’s epic! It’s awesome! so but it’s not worth the risk when the avalanche dangers are so high so People don’t know that they might even see a ski lift and just cut a rope or something and they can cause avalanches Close to the resort and bring them in bounds If you see any of these red flags the experts tell me you really should avoid the backcountry But if you just can’t resist you’re really encouraged to take an avalanche safety course Reporting from Big Cottonwood Canyon on door shy del Fox 13 news utah, Dora where can we see this video?
