Eyewitness News anchor Allison Latos speaks with the See Charlotte Youth Program

FEBRUARY IS LOW VISION AWARENESS MONTH AND TO TALK ABOUT THAT AND A WONDERFUL PROGRAM RIGHT HERE IN OUR OWN BACKYARD, I WOULD LIKE TO LOOK INTO THE STUDIO CURRENTLY WHO IS IN FIFTH GRADE AND ALSO ALLIE ROMERO WITH US AND THINK IT’S A JOINING US. WHAT DOES LOW VISION REALLY MEAN? IT IT JUST MEANS A VISION THAT CANNOT BE CORRECTED WITH GLASSES OR WITH CONTACT. AND THERE IS A PROGRAM IN CHARLOTTE THAT IS AN AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAM AND KARLY , YOU ARE ONE OF THE STUDENTS TELL ME ABOUT IT. WHAT DO YOU DO? HOW IS IT GEARED TOWARD CHILDREN WHO MIGHT HAVE VISUAL IMPAIRMENT? IT IS AT THE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH AND IT IS FOUR DAYS A WEEK MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY. IT IS FOR KIDS WHO HAVE DIFFERENT DEGREES OF VISUAL IMPAIRMENT AND WE DO ALL KINDS OF STATIONS TO HAVE ACTIVITIES AND WE DO CRAFTS AND KELLY IS ONE OF THE TEACHERS WHO RUNS THE CRAB STATIONS BUT WE DO MOBILITY SO LEARNING TO TRAVEL AND NAVIGATE WITH CANES AND WE DO COMMUNITY OUTREACH EVERY WEDNESDAY. IN THE MONTH OF FEBRUARY WE ARE MAKING BEDS AND SETTING TABLES. WE DO MONTHLY EVENTS WHERE WE ARE GOING OUT INTO THE COMMUNITY AND DOING THINGS LIKE ICE SKATING OR MAKING BREAD WREATHS AT THE BAKERY. WE TRY TO DO FUN THINGS FOR THE KIDS THAT ARE GEARED AROUND THE VISUAL IMPAIRMENT LIKE GAMES AND THINGS LIKE THAT. AND KARLY, WHAT DO YOU LIKE ? MY FAVORITE THING IS I LIKE TO LEARN NEW THINGS AND PLAY WITH MY FRIENDS. IT SOUNDS LIKE A LOT OF FUN AND WHAT IS THE BEEN LIKE TO HAVE A PROGRAM GEARED TOWARD YOUR CHILD HERE IN CHARLOTTE? I THINK ONE OF THE BEST THINGS ABOUT THE PROGRAM FOR OUR FAMILY IS IT GIVES KARLY A CHANCE TO MAKE FRIENDS AND HANG OUT WITH KIDS WITH VISUAL IMPAIRMENTS LIKE HERSELF . AT SCHOOL SHE JUST DOES NOT HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO CREATE REALLY DEEP, SOCIAL INTERACTIONS SHE DOES AT THE PROGRAM. AND THIS IS AT NO COST TO FAMILIES. THAT IS RIGHT. SO IF THERE ARE OTHER FAMILIES IN THE SHOWED COMMUNITY THAT HAVE CHILDREN WHO WOULD BE A PERFECT FIT FOR THIS, HOW DO THEY GET INVOLVED? THEY WOULD JUST CONTACT ME DIRECTLY AT MY EMAIL IS ON THE SOLUTIONS WEBPAGE AND WE ALSO HAVE A FACEBOOK PAGE SUGGEST CONTACTING ME AND THEN WE WOULD HAVE A PARENT AND A CHILD COME OUT AND EXPERIENCE THE PROGRAM TO SEE IF IT IS RIGHT FOR THEM, AND THEN WE WOULD JUST GO FROM THERE. BECAUSE IT IS ALL FOR THE NONPROFIT, FUNDING IS A KEY PART. SO COMING UP IN AUGUST THERE WILL BE AN OPPORTUNITY FOR MEMBERS OF THE SHOWED COMMUNITY TO GIVE BACK SO THERE IS AN EVENT I’M HAPPY TO BE A PART OF THAT I WILL EMCEE AUGUST 13 AND IT IS CALLED DINING IN THE DARK. CAN YOU EXPLAIN ABOUT THIS FUN EVENT AND WE ARE GOING TO ALLOW PEOPLE TO EXPERIENCE WHAT LIFE MAY BE LIKE? SO IT IS GOING TO BE AN EXPERIENCE YOU GET TO ENJOY A THREE COURSE MEAL WITHOUT YOUR SITE. IT WILL BE OPTIONAL IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO WEAR A BLINDFOLD YOU DO NOT HAVE TO, BUT IF YOU LIKE TO EXPERIENCE THAT IT WOULD BE SOMETHING NEAT AND DIFFERENT TO DO. WE WILL INCORPORATE LIGHT SLOWLY NEAR THE END AND THEN WE WILL HAVE SOME INFORMATION DURING OUR DESSERT. AND ANYONE WHO’S INTERESTED IN PARTICIPATING CAN FIND THAT INFORMATION ON YOUR WEBSITE.
