means more money is available for local recovery efforts

Cooper this week more than five million dollars in federal funds have been a
by FEMA for homeowners in Robeson County on campus total damages reported to FEMA
for potential relief funding came to about 1.7 million dollars
Chancellor Cummings said it could have been worse in the scheme of things
actually is pretty good if you look at our sister institution over in
Wilmington UNC Wilmington I mean their damage is in the hundred million to two
hundred million dollar range they had buildings that were actually one
building pretty much destroyed dorms impacted so we had 70% of our buildings
here on campus had some form of water damage but it was isolated you know when
you pour a lot of water on a building it’s going to find its way into the
building eventually no matter how well it’s built so there were walls that were
affected by water that we had to go in take out the sheetrock dry out the water
and now replace the sheetrock. 41 counties are now eligible for a

you cough or sneeze into your elbow and wash your hands frequently sexual
assault on college campuses is a massive problem and it has been for decades
frequently the topic has invoked discussions of opportunities because
some see fraternity culture as a part of the problem but a fraternity at the
University of Maryland is trying to change that impression and working to
combat sexual assault Richard reeve reports controlled chaos the Alpha Tau Omega
house all for a good call the biggest things we stand by is anti-sexual assault and sexual assault prevention. these frat brothers lining up to put together aftercare kits for victims of sexual
assault trying to let each victim now that we’re here and we support them. the kits contain clean clothing
toiletries like hairbrushes toothbrushes and toothpaste I think that it’s a very
great thing I think that is very thoughtful especially because of these
you know in these terrible situations each kit contains a very special
handwritten note we write personal notes in each package that says we’re here to help and you’re strong and people support you working with the nonprofit group Fear to Freedom the
fraternity put together 150 kits last year this weekend after a benefit
concert that raised $10,000 they are assembling 400 it gets everyone
motivated and we realize like what we’re really doing for the community. National sexual violence Resource Center

sexual assault during their time at college UMD has emergency blue lights
scattered across campus and students at UMD say they generally feel safe but are
watchful you don’t walk alone at night. it is safe during the day but you do of
course have to take these precautions giving them that support will help the
woman like heal you know it’s going to be a long process but it’s nice to know
that you have people behind you each aftercare bag includes a card with
the number for the national assault hotline which is 1-800-656-hope. it’s the

Owen house believed it was just a torn muscle
that turned out to be a broken femur in three places as we talk to animal Tiger
experts around the world they all said there’s nothing you can do you know it
just the surgery can’t be done because for many different reasons you know one
is a tiger will you know rip open their stitches they won’t for an incision that
that had to be made that large Owen House was determined to do whatever he
needed for shekinah to fully recover he found a team of doctors from Montana
and Idaho where the surgery took place to take a chance and operate on his
tiger our human orthopedic surgeon Dave Dr. Dave you know he said he had to keep
you know he’d never seen a tiger a real tiger before much less operate on once
shekinah is fully healed and is making her debut back to the show Owen House
says it wasn’t the same without her it was hard because she’s you know they’ve
been a part of the show for eight years and what was interesting which I didn’t
anticipate it was actually I think harder than her on her than it was on
the rest of us Owen House says his Tigers choose to
perform and enjoy doing so. At Sea Life Sydney Aquarium

young people to make Fitness a priority it feels good to be back after a week
off and even better because it’s homecoming week for all you Braves fans
that means there’s at least one game a day for the entire week and I’ve got it
all coming at you now we’ll start with football where the Braves played at
Central State in Wilberforce Ohio on Saturday and man was it a barnburner 82
total points were scored between both teams and 55 of those came in the first
half quarterback Josh Jones threw 250 yards two touchdowns and one
interception in a good all-around offensive day for the Braves
sadly they lost by 6 points with the final score being 44 to 38 their next
game is Saturday as they take on a one-in-six Concord team at 4:00 p.m.
after a loss on Monday to Lander volleyball was looking to get back to
winning ways as they took on Commerce College Tuesday the Braves were in prime
action on this day as three players registered double-digit kills freshman
Brianna Warren added six kills three did three digs and a season best 7 blocks
the Braves won in straight sets but the best part was with that win they matched
their win total from last year they are now 5 and o all-time against converse
the swim team was in action Friday and school records were broken left and
right freshman Bianca Bateman broke the school
record in the hundred fly with promise she was also a part of the group along
with Victoria Bruce a Oh Jackie night in Jaden Estrada they destroyed the school
record in a 400 medley relay by almost 6 seconds and it cap it all off that same
quartet broke another record that was only set six months ago interim coach
Oscar river otto says the team’s prospects look good we have a great
group of young girls we have a freshman they’re excellent we’re doing very well
and I think in this season would be able to improve and make a statement for the
upcoming season next year Braves soccer has been nothing but
stellar when at home this season before playing USC Aiken on Monday they
outscored opponents 12 to 0 at home that trend continued as they dominated the
Pacers winning 5 to 0 Stacy Scott netted the team’s first
three goals this was a personal and team milestone making it the team’s first
hat-trick in over four years on top of all that the black and gold have kept
USC Aiken winless against them in all total of 18 all-time meetings the Braves
are now 6 and 4 overall and 3 and 3 in the conference two weeks ago we had a
Braves cross-country runner when PBC runner of the week this week Alexandria
bear has won PBC golfer of the week this comes after her runner-up finish in
Catawba at the Pepsi Rendel mint Invitational Bare says she was satisfied
with her performance on that course I was definitely pleased with myself I
knew I could have saved a couple strokes that day I shot 3-under par and the part
is 72 and you can only choose a perfect round if you shoot 18 under par I really
do think coach was pleased with me and my team we broke two records that day we
broke a first round record with 292 in a second round total record as well Bare missed first place and tournament only one shot but carried the Braves to
a third place finished at the par 72 Country Club of Salisbury. October 16
marked the 50th anniversary of the Black Power salute at the Olympic Games in
Mexico when two American sprinters raised their glove fists and a show of
defiance the immediate consequences for their team was disastrous but now it’s
celebrated as a defining moment in a time of struggle CNN news source Don
Riddle has more civil rights workers reached the end of
the bridge where the cordon of troopers stand they are ordered to turn back now the United States underwent great social
upheaval in the 1960s a decade in which inspirational leaders like Dr. Martin
Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X strive to end the discrimination against African
Americans sometimes the protests were violent some were peaceful but even
after the passing of the civil rights and voting rights acts in 1964 and 65
many black Americans felt that injustice and discrimination lingered and it fell
the athletes like Muhammad Ali to make a stand but arguably the most iconic
stance of all came in Mexico in 1968 the protest was over in minutes but the
iconic image lasted for decades the infamous Black Power salute at the 1968
Olympics spoke volumes globally about prejudice in the 20th century and it
forever changed the lives of the men in the podium dad
they put y’all on the podium when you did this I’m gonna my whole house cause you know I
got a few brothers and sisters and in my whole house just erupted. how do they make you
feel seeing the inequality did it make you angry? it made me feel that I needed
to be somebody I needed to stand up for right. Sprinters Tommie Smith and John
Carlos were among a group of African American athletes that wanted to use the
68 Olympics in Mexico to make a statement our platform was to try to
educate people make them realize hey man it’s great for you to have your 15
minutes in the Sun at the Olympic Games however is greater to do something that
will last throughout the duration of time to make an adjustment for the
better for society. Frustrated at the inequality within American society and
the US Olympic team America’s black athletes originally considered a boycott
one of the country’s greatest black track stars Jesse Owens was dispatched
to talk them out of it. I had to remind Jesse as well as maybe Jimmy Hines and
Larry James as well you know that Jesse Owens ran against horses after he got
back from Germany to support his family because he couldn’t be earning a living
here’s a man and the the fronted Hitler won four gold medals and then still was
depicted as that old black guy you know when he went to the union hall to speak
they let him walk in the front door they brought him in the back door. It was
decided then that the there will not be a boycott and each athlete would
represent himself according to how they felt the country represented him and
that’s what happens. That gave us the flexibility to do what we thought
necessary. By winning gold and bronze respectively in the 200 meters Smith and
Carlos got their chance to make a stand in the year that Martin Luther King and
Robert Kennedy had been assassinated it was a brave move. Can you explain the symbolism of the protest what did the glove mean the
socks, the motion? The gloves mean the mid strength mean power now some people call it black power just
so happened I was a black guy okay the software represented poverty the
scarf I had around my neck represented lynching that so many people had gone
through this so I could stand stand there so all these things had a meaning. the response was immediate and the repercussions were permanent
both men were kicked out of the Olympics and off the american team. oh so you
like firestorm we had the American delegation where a lot of those
individuals that was dead didn’t particularly understand it and went into
a rage about what they was experiencing at that particular time and we knew that
we was in Hell’s Kitchen so to speak Smith Carlos and even the silver
medalist Peter Norman who wore a human rights badge on the podium in support
found life difficult after the games they were widely criticized and shunned
by their peers what advice would you give to an athlete who perhaps feels
like they would like to make a statement very simple
I can’t tell somebody what what to do there but whatever action you have
there’s always a reaction think before you act because the action will speak
for itself in history. That’s all I have for this week’s action if you’re going
to any homecoming events this weekend make sure to stay safe back to the
studio thanks Tyler and that’s it for us we’ll
be back next week with another episode of Carolina news today
