Airbnb Disaster leaves family homeless | A Current Affair

the Hyde family's trip couldn't have gone any worse confusion over their air B&B booking forced them to sleep in their car then a retirement village they're still trying to figure out whose fault it is it was a family getaway turned nightmare it's almost in tears I just had enough I just wanted to stay in a proper bed at the hands of this a B&B hostess they were meant to have this place to themselves but you wouldn't leave sorry don't take a father differently the Hyde family including seven adults a child and a baby say they drove more than ten hours from Brisbane to Sydney to celebrate the life of their mother we're here to spread the ashes of my mum she passed away four odd years ago it's taken us a while to finally I guess build up the courage to come down here and do it the family thought a B&B would be their best option but they say they had an unexpected and feisty houseguest when we got there the lady stated that because the house had five bedrooms she had a right to stay there the family say that hostess Sophie refused to leave quite aggressive and raised a voice can I shout it a bit and she pretty much blatantly asked how are you guys gonna have a party in my house and I said no we just need the privacy air B&B offered the family a full refund but it was going to take up to 10 days for the money to show up in their account so with nowhere to go they were forced to sleep in their cars not wine you slept here in your car yes that's right how was that nightmarish not to mention probably freezing cold yeah yeah even with the blankets and a pillow it still wasn't enough Andrew and his partner Bella had it easy parked next door Andrews dad Roderick his brother Jesse Jesse's partner Selena and their one-year-old baby little Edward all slept in this car together not ideal for anyone to be sleeping in their cars with a baby and he's just getting over a virus and in the next car Andrews brothers Patrick and a 9 year old Christopher and Patrick's partner Amy all got cozy I've been hearing like frogs croaking birds chirping the boots small and we have to put stuff in the back seat of me where I couldn't fit in so this is where you guys spent this second night that's right and what exactly is this room this is the common room of the old people's home lucky for the hide family their grandmother lives in a tiny one-bedroom apartment in a retirement village in Sydney so the family of nine had no choice but to move into the complex after a quick trip to Kmart to stock up on blowup mattresses and blankets it kind of looks like a school camp felt like woke up at 3:00 in the morning mattresses were down flat laying on the ground practically in the little apartment that my grandma lives in there are enough hot water for maybe three showers a day so some of us haven't even had a shower yet and that's kind of what all all that we've been thinking about for the past couple of day is not hanging out with family or talking about memories or anything like that it's just been trying to find somewhere to stay it's not the first time hostess Sophie has been accused of being a less than welcome host this review on air B&B from another guest says Sophie was really rude when we reported back about the cockroaches so we paid Sophie a visit do you realize that you've left seven adults a child and a baby without anywhere to sleep last night and tonight sorry I know you know exactly what I'm talking about you go further from the power in affair they've contacted us because they have nowhere to sleep and nowhere to go I don't know who's who the Hyde family and suddenly Sophie remembers they can sort of itself look at the kinds of nothing to do if you mean do you realize that they came to mourn the loss of a family member and this has turned into a living glow in a turn of events Sophie invites us for a tour of the home this room and this room and where is the one that you were going to stay I asked saying all this I he says she asked Airbnb to upload the ad for her and claims it's Airbnb fault the ad was misconstrued Katie Carlin is from Australian Traveler magazine you are booking a property of just another ordinary person they're not in the hospitality industry they're not running a hotel what you're going to get is going to be of a different standard most of the time Katie's advice for hosts the more you put on the listing the better you really would be managing everyone's expectations to to list everything that you possibly can about the property and it's really going to increase the likelihood that you're going to get a positive comment you could you want an apology for the family they'd be like me now after me give me out she wouldn't care if we were on the streets you know didn't care that were in our cars Airbnb told us it's disappointed with its original handling of the case and apologize to the Hyde's they've also put them up in a premium home for the rest of their trip free of charge the full statement is on our web site
